IIB’s Executive Director, LaVonn Schlegel, was invited to speak at the Second Annual IU-ANU Summit Meeting in Canberra, Australia. In its first year, the institute focused primarily on distance education courses in selected foreign languages (for example, Uzbek and Pashto for ANU students and Indonesian for IU students) and exchanges of students and staff. In subsequent years, the institute has convened joint workshops and supported collaborative research and scholarship on the Pan-Asian region.

Almost exactly a year ago, during a visit to Bloomington by ANU Vice Chancellor Brian P. Schmidt, a Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist, the two universities announced the establishment of a joint master’s degree program in arts administration and museum and heritage studies. Graduates of the dual-degree program, which launched this fall, will receive both a Master of Arts Administration degree from IU’s top-rated School of Public and Environmental Affairs and a Master of Museum and Heritage Studies from the College of Arts and Social Sciences. (Canberra has Australia’s largest concentration of museums and other cultural institutions.) IU, through the Institute of International Business at the Kelley School of Business, and ANU have also worked together in recent years to support economic and educational reforms in conflict-torn Myanmar. Other recent collaborations between the two universities include exchanges between ANU and IU’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and between the ANU National Security College and the IU Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research.

Attending the summit and speaking on behalf of IU’s academic and research units were Michael Brose; Damir Cavar, Department of Linguistics, College of Arts and Sciences; Lesley Davis, IU Maurer School of Law; Carrie Doherty, School of Public Health-Bloomington; Margaret Dolinsky, School of Art, Architecture + Design; Beth Gazley, School of Public and Environmental Affairs; Carolyn Lantz, College of Arts and Sciences; LaVonn Schlegel, Kelley School of Business, Institute for International Business; and Von Welch; Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research.

Packed into a couple of hours, the summit featured a nearly overwhelming display of ideas, all of which highlighted the remarkable energy and enthusiasm that exist on each side of the IU-ANU relationship and the power of a partnership that – in President McRobbie’s words – is “one of the most substantial relationships that a U.S. university has with any overseas institution.”

Dr. Audretsch is a Distinguished Professor and the Ameritech Chair of Economic Development at Indiana University, where he also serves as Director of the Institute for Development Strategies. His research has focused on the links between entrepreneurship, government policy, innovation, economic development, and global competitiveness. Dr. Audretsch is also the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal, and recently co-authored the book The Seven Secrets of Germany.

Today, Dr. Audretsch will share his insights on the economic landscape of Germany, as well as the current state of diversity and youth entrepreneurship in Europe’s largest and strongest economy.

Lessons Learned — A GBIer’s Takeaway on Time Management

That was the first lesson I learned at the Kelley School of Business. During the Global Business Institute program, I learned a lot of different lessons about personal life, professionalism, and entrepreneurship — and the most valuable lesson was “time management.” Your attitude towards time represents your personality, so you have to make it sharp. For example, if you have a 9:00AM lecture you have to be there at least at 8:50AM to choose a compatible seat, and to prepare yourself and your tools for the lecture. The professors too will have to come at least by 8:55AM to prepare their slides and board and to make sure that everything is ready to go at 9:00AM sharp.

Also in this program, I learned how to manage my time because my time was limited. There was limited time for breakfast, lunch, and teamwork before the deadlines, so I had to make use of it and make every single moment effective for me and for my teammates. I will not lie and tell you that time management was easy, of course not. It was very hard in the beginning but after a short period of time I adapted to it and enjoyed it. I enjoyed making use of every single moment, and by doing so I realized that every day I have a lot of time and many things to do. That’s what makes anyone more successful in the future – using every single moment and managing it. It’s like what we heard at Kelley: Go from Moment to Momentum.

Thoughts and Reflections at the Conclusion of GBI 2017

The GBIers have left Bloomington, and it seems as though something is missing. The moment they all arrived at the airport, there was a spark of excitement in the air and a positive presence that never left them. It was amazing to watch a group of almost 100 students from 7 different countries go from being complete strangers to family. They taught one another about their home countries, and it was clear from an outsider’s perspective the pride and love they have for their countries. Personally, Culture Night was one of the highlights of the program because it allowed everyone to share a special part of their culture that was unique. We experienced everything from a traditional Moroccan “wedding,” to the Tunisian anthem, to a Jordanian dance. I’ve never traveled to their parts of the world, but it felt as though I had because we got a first-hand perspective into their lives.

The students learned valuable knowledge about different countries, on top of learning business concepts from one of the top business schools in the country. They basically earned a four-year undergraduate degree from the Kelley School of Business crammed into a short span of four weeks. Each and every one of them worked long, hard hours every day, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that level of commitment in my life. Their hard work and dedication paid off because, in the end, they all improved immensely. As a cultural liaison, we had the opportunity to watch their presentations week to week, and the transformation they made was clearly demonstrated. It didn’t matter which team ultimately won in the end because they all won skills and knowledge that will last them a lifetime.
Simply by applying to the program in the first place, they stepped out of their comfort zones and came to a country most of them have never traveled to before. This was a huge step, and we were able to watch them take “little” steps outside of their comfort zone throughout the program as well. They tried new cuisine and dishes they don’t have at home, they learned what kale was at the farmers market, they took it upon themselves to walk to Griffy Lake and hike, and they met local residents who soon became friends.
At the beginning of the program, I never thought we would all grow so close and become such good friends. This experience opened my eyes to a new part of the world, and showed me the beauty in diversity and meeting new people. I’m going to miss everyone so much, and I know all of the Cultural Liaisons feel the same. GBI, you all have brilliant minds and are hungry to make a difference in your home countries. Follow your passions in whichever direction they may be, and I am confident you will live prosperous lives. In my heart I know we will all meet again someday, and I’m eager for that day to come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories. The space you all filled in Foster may be empty, but you’ll always remain in a space of our hearts.

My Life at Kelley – from Moment to Momentum

When I first arrived in Bloomington, Indiana, I was dazzled by the splendid variety of night-colored and idyllic flowers—a place where all walks of seeds were thriving. I was part of a group of students drawn from all over the Middle East and North Africa to participate in the 2017 Global Business Institute at the prestigious Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. We were a group of eager students who came to Kelley to acquire skills and learn new ways of doing business. Ways that would ultimately make us entrepreneurs who will be able to cement our ideas into real and successful companies.

 
During the first week of the program valedictorians, nerds, bookworms, and techies alike were crying over business problems at 3 in the morning working to perfect a business plan, build a contingent marketing strategy, and figure out how to satisfy the target customer’s needs. Additionally, all classes and activities including dinners and company visits were compulsory during the program. Getting to classes on time is not the norm at Kelley; it simply means being late. One has to make it into room HH1000 five minutes before class time, and before the faculty arrives to begin the day’s lesson. This was something that I couldn’t accomplish as punctually as I expected, despite vain attempts to wake up on time. Punctuality was given primacy during GBI.
 
By the second week of the program, we were divided into teams and then introduced into a competition assessing the business feasibility of each team’s idea. Each team had to progressively update their work with the assistance of a coach from among great Kelley faculty.  
 
If there is something that certainly impressed me during GBI, it is how thoughtfully the program schedule was structured. Each week we were scheduled for class time, team building activities, networking opportunities, and large-scale company visits such as The Coca-Cola Company and Eli Lilly. Our time was carefully planned in a manner that was correlated to our state of progress in the competition. As individuals and teams we had the chance to attend courses in marketing, business, and entrepreneurship, and accounting, taught by strongly committed experts— many of whom have contributed to the shaping of modern American industry.
 
When we were not working on our presentations, in small groups we were hanging out downtown Bloomington. I remember much time spent roaming the strip malls and pubs on Kirkwood Avenue, the Indiana Memorial Union, and other campus places at night time. I have so many memories of the delight and joy that each one of us was the origin of.
 
Along the way, the GBI experience was deeply transformative in various ways that are complementary.  Faculty, Staff, Cultural Liaisons, Program Assistants, and the citizens of Indiana taught me to be more punctual, more humble, and ultimately a better person.
It goes without saying that during the Global Business Institute experience, Kelley’s faculty successfully made me look differently at business and entrepreneurship principles – and literally changed the manner I perceive the world of business. Today, I believe that business and entrepreneurship are all about problem-solving; that is not because I am an engineering student, but rather because it is only through deep observation and visionary perspective that one can truly attune to people’s problems make this world a better place to live.

Do you remember the last time you volunteered your time and talents to an important cause? How did it make you feel? Does the thought of including volunteering in your busy life seem overwhelming? How about the thought of making a difference in someone else’s life and making them happy with simple actions?
This is the purpose of volunteering and this is how we ended our second week of the GBI Program on a high note. Working with the “Habitat for Humanity” organization, which aims to make the world a better place where everyone can have a decent life.
 
We were two groups of 20 students accompanied by 2 program assistants, split between morning and afternoon shifts. We arrived at the site on Saturday at 8:00 AM, met those responsible, were given building equipment and began the work. Divided into 2 teams, the first team had to paint the house and the second one had to do some work in the basement including fixing steel bars with nails, taping cardboard and clearing the plastic used to protect the house from water. It wasn’t easy since it was raining the day before so the ground was so muddy, but at the end of the day we were so happy and proud of our accomplishment – especially that that house was built for a family who was welcoming a newborn 
baby on the same day.
This experience opened the door for some remarkable learning opportunities we had not considered previously, and things we did not think we were capable of doing. Likewise, it provided us with the chance to look beyond our own circumstances and appreciate what others are going through!

GBI Culture Night: Seven Nations, One GBI Family

GBI Students from all seven participant countries shared their traditions and heritage

It is a tradition of the GBI Program to host Culture Night, an evening of performance, dancing, conversation, food, and fun. While Arabic language and Muslim religion are factors that bind these seven nations in the MENA region, each country has a very distinct culture from the others. In the words of GBI participant Haajar El Hamdouchi of Morocco, “So different yet so united.” Culture Night gives each participating country a chance to prepare a 10-15 minute segment showcasing some of their favorite cultural aspects of their home country. Most of the students bring traditional garments with them to wear for this night.

Music and dancing are binding elements for GBI students, and many of the countries chose to showcase traditional dances. The Palestinians and Jordanians both danced the Dabka, Saudi Arabians performed the Khatwa, Tunisians danced the Mezoued, Egyptians demonstrated Raks Shaaby, and Algerians danced the Kabyle. It was striking to see that within each country, despite having grown up in different cities and towns, the students still knew how to sing and dance to the tunes of their national heritage.

The event was not only pleasing to the eye and ear, but also to the taste buds – as the Tunisian team brought treats for everyone to try. Marwen Ayari brought homemade Tunisian Rfisa and Makroudh that his own mother made. Marwen says he realized that people love and appreciate cultural gifts, especially foods, so he decided to bring the treats 5,000 miles from his hometown to Bloomington. He said, “These sweets really mean a lot to me, and emotionally relate to many moments in my life since my mother would make them for us every Eid for over a quarter century.”

The GBIers were not the only ones to showcase performance, however. GBI staff members prepared a few segments to demonstrate a bit of U.S. pride and culture. Lead Program Assistant, Jelani Ince, performed his original poem called “Dichotomy.” This moving piece speaks of the contributions that Black men and women have made to the United States, while simultaneously facing prejudice and racism. Program Cultural Liaisons put on a comical but informative “hamburger taste test,” comparing and sharing about various fast food chains in the U.S. Lastly, the Program Assistants and Cultural Liaisons came together for a choreographed dance to a mash-up of some favorite American dance songs.

One of the most astonishing aspects of Culture Night occurred, however, after the technical “end” of the event. Once students were ushered out of the room in The Kelley School of Business, a spontaneous drum circle broke out in the courtyard. To the rhythm of a single tableh drum, the GBI students burst into song and dance. While regional accents sometimes make it hard to communicate when speaking, all the student were able to sing loudly and proudly in Arabic. The Kelley courtyard became a flurry of beating hands and feet, as GBIers hoisted one another off the ground and celebrated their rich heritage of merrymaking. In the words of Egyptian participant Mahmoud Abdelwahd, it was, “all the aroma, fragrance, and magic of the East combined in one place and at one time.”

This spontaneous demonstration of joy and culture was a serendipitous ending to Culture Night. Cultural Liaison, Allison Yates, summed it up well when she said, “No matter what each one of them presented about, you could see a depth of pride, spirit, and enthusiasm for sharing their love of their home countries with the group. I really enjoyed how throughout the night, I could sense small differences but many similarities between the dances and music throughout the region.” Culture Night served as an event not only for GBIers to identify cultural diversity and similarity, but more so to identify those elements that make us all human.  In the words of Cultural Liaison, Alyssa Licquia, “The MENA students gave a lesson in how the celebration of diversity can enrich our lives by inviting everyone to embrace each tradition and by using inclusion to build friendships spanning the world.”
