GBI: A New Approach to Business at Home

We asked one alumnus what he did with his GBI education at home, and he described how his time in Bloomington altered his personal strategy.

After leaving the GBI program, I felt like something changed in me. I become less dreamy and more down-to-earth when it came to business and entrepreneurship. My entrepreneurial mindset evolved and right after going back to school, I naturally started thinking differently about all aspects of my involvement on campus.

Back then, I was an active member with the Enactus team of my university and I was in charge of communication. In 2013 right after the GBI program ended, I was lucky enough to meet and talk about this experience with several new members and I met Manal and Louay. We started to get to know each other and we worked closely and formed the core team. Thanks to the skills I learned at GBI, I contributed to the feasibility study of multiple social business-oriented projects that we worked on during the whole academic year (2013-2014). I came up with this pragmatic and rigorous perspective on business while my peers, Manal and Louay, were more technically focused on the project. The skills combination was just perfect. (more…)

One GBIer’s reflections on the potential for learning at GLI

Just like it was yesterday, I remember the feeling of the butterflies in my stomach after reading the big bold ‘’CONGRATULATIONS” written on my GBI acceptance e-mail. Three simple words that hold a lifetime of memories and an unforgettable experience. I said it many times before and I’ll say it again, the person I was that first walked into the program is not the same one that got out of it or the one that I am now.

The GBI experience has allowed me to gain a different perspective of looking at things. I had my best and worst moments and I now realize that even if you fail, it is not enough of a reason to give up. You can always get right back up and be even stronger. I also learned how to recognize my errors and turn them into lessons to benefit my team and prepare me ready to face the next challenges. (more…)

CIBER Focus “Education and Entrepreneurship in Palestine” with Fadi Kattan

Dr. Fadi Kattan has served as Dean of the Shucri Ibtahim Dabdoub Faculty of Business Administration at Bethlehem University since 2000. He has studied in the United States and the United Kingdom and teaches Accounting at Bethlehem University. His research focuses on management, accounting, contingency theory, and development implications of the Oslo Agreement.

In this edition of CIBER Focus, Dr. Kattan discusses his career in business education in Palestine, the role education plays in development, recent events to promote entrepreneurship within Bethlehem University, and the obstacles young entrepreneurs face.

CIBER Focus: “Information Governance around the World” with Scott Shackelford

Scott Shackelford serves as a professor of business law and ethics at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. He is also the Cybersecurity Program Chair and Director of the Cybersecurity and Internet Governance Program at the Ostrom Workshop. Dr. Shackelford is an Affiliated Scholar at both Harvard and Stanford, as well as a Senior Fellow at Indiana University’s Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research, and a Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Shackelford received his PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge and JD from Stanford University. His areas of expertise include cybersecurity, privacy, property rights, sustainability, and international law and relations. He has published over 100 works and received numerous academic and teaching awards.

In today’s interview, Dr. Shackelford shares his insights on international online privacy perspectives and the laws that govern data collection and protection.

CIBER Focus: “U.S. Trade Policy with China” with Mostafa Beshkar

Dr. Beshkar is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Adjunct Assistant Professor of International Studies at Indiana University. His research and teaching both center on international trade, with an emphasis on trade agreements and institutions for international trade cooperation. Dr. Beshkar is the author of recent works on Safeguards and other Flexibility Mechanisms in Trade Agreements, Dispute Settlement in the World Trade Organization, and Interdependence of Trade Policies.

Today, Dr. Beshkar will discuss the economic context and implications of the recent trade issues involving the United States and China.

CIBER Focus: “Language, Culture, and Business in Former Soviet Countries” with Tyler Madsen

Tyler is the Senior Director of Eurasian Markets at 4Life Research, a company that manufactures and distributes supplements to support immune system health, based in Sandy, Utah. He has previously served as an Associate Instructor of the Russian language at Indiana University. Tyler has a background in Slavic languages, marketing, communications, and public relations.

Today, Tyler will discuss his background with the Russian language, how he uses language skills to tap into Eurasian markets and the current business environment in former Soviet countries.

IU CIBER Scholarship Enables International Exchange

I want to thank IU CIBER for making it possible for me to travel to Belize for the Kelley M-360: Sales for Social Impact course. The experience of doing business in another country is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life and will always look back upon fondly.

 

During my time in Belize, I learned more than I could have ever learned in the classroom. My team’s client entrepreneur is an amazing individual with a bounty of world experience. He taught us just as much about life as we taught him about business. I not only learned how to work with a real business client, but I also learned how to adjust business styles to another culture. In Belize, like many Central American countries, it is uncommon to talk about profits and losses. We had to tread carefully in gathering financial information. In line with a real-world consulting project, we definitely could not arrive with a solution from just our prep research. We spent the entire first day onsite asking questions about the business, about Belize, and about the culture. We continued learning until the very last day with our entrepreneur, and I would not have wanted it any other way. (more…)

Ahmad Abu Aisheh has a background in internet and computer networks, with a degree from Palestine Polytechnic University. He and his friend Dia’a Ihraiz are the founders of Ta7awwaj, an e-commerce startup in Palestine. Ta7awwaj is born from the idea of creating an electronic platform in Palestine that can provide comparisons between products from different stores and offer free delivery.

In this video, Ahmad will share the story of how his startup began, and the challenges he faces as an Entrepreneur in Palestine.

Hala Abu Nimeh founded the startup Cleanos with her friend Lina Faroun when she was studying economics at university. Cleanos is in the initial stages of a startup and is created upon the idea of being a middle-man delivery service between laundry customers and the laundry service itself.

Today, Hala will discuss the entrepreneurship climate in Palestine along with her startup Cleanos.
