In Part Two of our special series on Business and Peace, Retired Ambassador David Litt draws from his many decades of experience to explain the current economic and investment environment of the Middle East. Foreign direct investment plays an important role in this region of the world, and it’s potential to influence the stabilizing and peace-building processes cannot be overestimated.

The ability for business—entrepreneurs, SMEs, and multinationals alike—to act as a stabilizing force in the world has been changing and leading to exciting research and action. On October 3, IU CIBER kicked off a month-long discussion on the role business can play in peace-making, peace-building, and peace-keeping. On October 3, IU CIBER kicked off a month-long discussion on the role business can play in peace-making, peace-building, and peace-keeping. Held in partnership with the Kelley School of Business, IU Office of the Vice President for International Affairs, the Institute for Defense & Business, and the IU School of Global and International Studies, the day-long conference brought together representatives from business, government, academics, and NGOs to examine this topic in a free and public discussion. The Indiana Business Journal has recognized Sherry D. Davis as a 2016 Woman of Influence. Introducing the Class of 2016 IBJ’s Women of Influence program is in its 10th year of recognizing women who have risen to the highest levels of business, the arts and public service in central Indiana. The 2016 class includes 23 women with diverse experiences and achievements. Honorees include an advocate for children, a federal judge, higher education executives, and health professionals.

CIBER Pedagogy: Using Globe Smart in the Classroom

IU CIBER adds 2 new pedagogy videos on engaging students and teams using a dynamic online tool

The IU Center for International Business Education & Research CIBER) recently added two new videos to our ongoing Instructional Resources initiative.

In the first video, Kelley professors P. Roberto Garcia and Tatiana Kolovou provide an introduction to Globe Smart’s Country Information Tool and how it can be used to provide students with practical, targeted cultural information for a class or group projects. Globe Smart is an online learning tool which has cultural information on almost 100 countries! Indiana University faculty, staff, and students are able to access this tool for free. 
 
 
In the second video, Garcia and Kolovou provide an introduction to Globe Smart’s Profile Tool and how it can be used to help individual students and teams in your classroom. Whether it’s to help a student prepare for going abroad or to help a team navigate their working preferences, the Globe Smart Profile Tool provides customized advice for students and faculty alike.
 


IU CIBER seeks to provide a variety of instructional and pedagogical resources, ranging from K-12 educational modules to videos that demonstrate how to internationalize content within the college classroom. All Instructional Resources can be found at http://go.iu.edu/1fJE.

The 2015-2016 school year saw IU CIBER completing an impressive thirty-seven interviews for our online CIBER Focus series. This was the eighth year running for the series, with a revamped template and a new team adding fresh energy. Ranging in topic from local entrepreneurship to new opportunities in Iran and Cuba, diversity in the workplace, and women’s empowerment, CIBER Focus captivates the viewer with timely, significant interviews on diverse, intriguing issues and gives the public an opportunity to learn more about the world’s business environment.

This past year’s line-up covers both domestic and global topics with an impressive guest list including CEOs and founders of international organizations, executive-level business professionals, former diplomats, and academics from some of the world’s top institutions.

IIB’s Executive Director, LaVonn Schlegel, was invited to speak at the recent C3 US-Arab Business & Healthcare Summit in New York City. Schlegel joined event keynote speaker, General David H. Petraeus (ret.), and 60 additional global business leaders who addressed an international delegation of over 500 attendees on promoting and improving U.S. and Arab initiatives in order to strengthen security and business relations between the regions.  
 
Mr. Ransel N. Potter, Founder & Managing Partner, C3 Summit International, remarked during the opening session, “This C3 US-Arab Business & Healthcare Summit is about exploring ideas, suggestions, and realistic recommendations as possible solutions to today’s bilateral security, technology, commercial development, and healthcare challenges. Based on the insights of the Summit’s global leaders and thinkers, participants can begin to immediately implement what they will hear and learn to help bring these innovations, pilot projects, cases studies, public-private partnerships, and other practical solutions to fruition in the global commercial and healthcare sectors.”
The 2016 C3 US-Arab Business Summit was an exclusive event dedicated to forging new business relationships, fostering existing partnerships and exchanging best practices by building a cohesive global community through bilateral cooperation. Reinforcing the theme of the 2015 C3 US-Arab Business Summit entitled “Cyber Security, Smart Cities and Bilateral Prosperity,” the 2016 C3 Summit focused on solving the complex, multi-faceted, interlocking issues of security, technology, science and trade through collaboration, innovation, and partnership.

#KelleyGBI2016 – Reflections from a Cultural Liaison

Four months ago, I was hired as a Cultural Liaison for GBI. I was excited and thought the job would be fun and engaging. I had no idea that I would make such wonderful friends. Many of you have described GBI to be life-changing, and it certainly was.  Just know it was life-changing for the staff as well, and we will all cherish the relationships we built with you this summer.
July brought me incredible new experiences and knowledge. At some point, I was able to speak to each one of you individually. You told me about your dreams, families, cultures, countries, friends, and your amazing ideas to make a positive impact back home. I was constantly impressed by the strong spirit and creative mind of every GBI student.
Here are a few of my highlights:

The true “Hoosier experience” of buying corn at the Bloomington Farmer’s Market
Leaving a GBI mark on the Indiana University Campus by painting the Jordan Bridge
Learning how to be ‘fancy’ at the Etiquette Dinner
Both laughing and crying at Culture Night from your beautiful, fun, and touching presentations about your countries
Exploring Nashville, Indiana together and eating way too much ice cream
Seeing your amazing work and creativity in your Final Presentations
Finally, the closing dinner, where we all felt pride in our countries, and in one another
I’m already planning my trips to visit ALL of you, so expect a call from me in the future. I loved showing you my country, and can’t wait to see the beauty of yours!
Just remember that every time I yelled at you for being late or taking too many selfies, I did it out of love. I’ll see you soon, but until then, I’ll be watching to see how you change the world.

IU CIBER Awards Scholarship for Short-Term Study Abroad

IU CIBER’s $1,000 scholarship allows rising sophomores to experience international business first hand on a short-term trip to India

I recently returned from a 10-day study tour in India with Kelley’s P-256 course “Business in a ‘Flat’ World”. Thanks to IU CIBER’s financial award I was able to take advantage of this opportunity. Before this trip, I had never left the United States, so this was a great learning experience for me. The trip especially deepened my understanding of international business. I got the opportunity to observe in-person how international business works and the impact it has from different perspectives.

As a class, we spent time at a few non-governmental organizations. Although most of our visits were to nonprofits, international business is still critical in these types of businesses. For example, Jude Felix Field Hockey Academy was only recently confirmed to be able to accept foreign donations. EnAble India, an organization which helps persons with disabilities become economically independent, is focused on India but is now able to receive resources from anywhere in the world with their new website. They will also be able to have a larger impact with their online “EnAble Academy” program.

Some companies like Deloitte have a consistent brand throughout all their offices around the world. At the corporate offices of Deloitte India-United States, any potential employees have to go through rounds of testing in writing, listening, understanding, and speaking clearly in American English before being hired.

We visited one of the schools in Bangalore that partners with the Akshara Foundation

Other companies are still working to expand globally. We visited the offices of Tata Elxsi, a huge company which is a household name throughout India but not well known in the United States. Even at the hotel, we stayed at in Bangalore, the impact of international business was clear through the accommodations available for business people from around the world. 

It was surreal to visit the Taj Mahal. Definitely one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen!


I am incredibly grateful to have had this eye-opening experience. Thank you!

These experiences and IU CIBER’s continued support for students to explore international destinations and businesses contribute to the overall objective of strengthening and promoting international education, language training, and research capacities of U.S. enterprises and universities.

 

Advancement and Development through Entrepreneurship Programs and Training (ADEPT) Conducts Solving Integrated Business Challenges for Faculty and Students in Myanmar

Kelley School leads Solving Integrated Business Challenges workshop for the Yangon University of Economics

One of the key areas of weakness for business students in developing countries is in their problem-solving, critical thinking and business leadership skills. In other words, graduates are not prepared to solve the integrative business challenges inherent to multinational corporations working on penetrating developing markets with their professional service and products. The lack of preparedness weakens local staff pools and often motivates corporations to source their professional leadership from international locations. For Myanmar, that means drawing on more advanced economies in Thailand and Singapore, or Hong Kong—a loss for Myanmar’s opening economy—especially in terms of valuable work experience.

Kelley School of Business Prof. Dr. Terry Campbell, as part of the USAID-funded ADEPT partnership in Myanmar, conducted a seminar series on addressing these integrated business challenges for the Yangon University of Economics. The informative seminar program, between July 21st and 25th, provided 94 first-year MBA students with problem-solving, critical thinking and business leadership skills as well as a look at temperament an emotional intelligence in the workplace. The seminar for 21 faculty members focused on teaching the same integrated problem-solving and leadership, to prepare them for incorporating the ideas and methods into their classes. Specific issues to be examined include improvement plans, critical thinking, leading using personality type tools, critical thinking, teams, exploring the net-present value of human resources, investigating barriers and alternative solutions, and examining change management in an organization.

ADEPT is a public-private partnership funded by USAID with the IIB, in collaboration with major alliance partners Hewlett Packard (HP), the VinaCapital Foundation’s Lotus Impact fund, and Business for Social Responsibility (BSR).

This visit vastly contributes to ADEPT’s core mission–to bring a lasting legacy of entrepreneurship skills, opportunities, and capacity building to the business and higher-education of Myanmar.

Lot’s of Selfies at #KelleyBIG2016 Culture Night!

Week two of BIG 2016 started with a bang as the students participated in Culture Night and had free time over the weekend to get to know one another on a personal level. The weekend ended with a campus-wide scavenger hunt and bowling, leading into a full week of Swahili and Turkish classes. The students seemed to enjoy both languages, especially Turkish, as the lessons included ideas and concepts applicable to their interests. The students helped cook and taste various dishes traditionally served in East Africa while also having the opportunity to try on traditional clothing and learn about music and the art of dance in these two regions. Each of these hands-on lessons made an impact on the students’ understanding of how these cultures differ from their own as they prepared for their presentations.

Evenings (when we weren’t out trying to “catch ‘em all” with Pokemon Go) were spent working on team presentations, researching cultures and business customs for their assigned city of interest. In two short weeks, the students learned a lot about the importance of team cohesion, the delegation of tasks, consulting experts, and time management while preparing for their final projects.

The day for the final presentations arrived all too quickly and was both exciting and nerve-wracking for most students. Each of them dressed their best with the hope of impressing the judges with their knowledge of culture and with an innovative idea for a business in one of the three regions we studied. Judges did not hold back their questions and asked for in-depth details regarding the students’ businesses. However, each team handled these questions like true experts in the field. Finally, at the Awards Ceremony, the students were presented with feedback from the judges and participation certificates. When it was time to say their final goodbyes, many of the students cried while others gave hugs and took their final photos together. As they were leaving, many students told us that their participation in BIG was life-changing, and they were all grateful for the opportunity to be a part of BIG 2016.
